The Solution: A Thoughtful, Right-Sized Addition
A modern, well-planned addition off the back of the home provided the perfect solution. It created room for a spacious new kitchen, a serene owner’s suite, and a larger basement with room for both storage and recreation (including a golf simulator).
The old porch was repurposed and expanded to make way for the bright, sun-filled kitchen the homeowners had long envisioned. The former kitchen space will soon serve as a convenient butler’s pantry, adding yet another layer of thoughtful storage. Upstairs, the new suite means the previous bedroom and bath can now serve as comfortable guest accommodations.
Throughout the house, the addition flows seamlessly between the original spaces and the new spaces across all three levels, maintaining the character and charm these homeowners loved while creating the additional space they needed.
Importantly, the addition was carefully designed to preserve as much of the backyard as possible. The homeowners had lovingly created a garden oasis over the years, and it was important to them to keep that sanctuary intact and allow space to recreate areas. The new footprint leaves plenty of room for outdoor living, with space for a future patio and many more afternoons spent outside.
Before the Renovation: Daily Frustrations in a Home Full of Potential
Though the home’s craftsmanship stood the test of time, with beautiful archways, detailed mouldings, and hardwood floors throughout, the layout didn’t suit modern living. Storage was a constant struggle. There were no closets for coats or cleaning supplies, and no place for seasonal gear or pet essentials. Entrances were tight and felt unsafe, and the flow between spaces, both inside and out, simply didn’t work.
The homeowners envisioned a home where every item had a place, where rooms felt open and connected, and where indoor spaces flowed easily into the treasured outdoor retreat.
Goals for the Renovation: Space, Flow, and Function
The wish list was clear:
-
A larger, functional kitchen with natural light and space to entertain
-
An owner’s suite with thoughtful storage and modern comfort
-
A main-level powder room for convenience and accessibility
-
Expanded basement space for storage and leisure
-
Better flow, and safer, more welcoming entries and exits
-
A design that blended seamlessly with the home’s original style while also being modern in function
- Increase ease of connection to the outdoors.
After the Renovation: A Home That Finally Fits
Today, the home is everything the couple hoped for — brighter, more functional, and ready for hosting and entertaining, with ease and joy. The larger kitchen opens effortlessly to the living and dining areas and invites the outdoors in with beautiful natural light. The expanded basement offers storage, recreation, and even space for a new golf simulator.
Entrances are safer and more spacious, and a new mudroom is in the works to keep everyday clutter and pet essentials organized. With the future butler’s pantry soon to be complete, there’s a place for everything, just as they’d hoped for.
Most of all, these homeowners are thrilled to still be in the home and neighbourhood they love, with new spaces that allow them to relax, entertain, organize better, and take full advantage easy access to outside all year round.
They’re looking forward to summer evenings spent in the garden and many more years of creating memories in a home that now truly fits. And, they can't wait to host dinners and overnight guests, with comfort and ease.
